In prop theory, the diameter of the prop is equal to the distance traveled (in inches) for every 360° propeller rotation. For example: a 13" prop would move a vessel 13 inches per revolution. Increasing the prop pitch will increase the top end speed (or the inches moved per revolution) but sufficient engine horsepower is required to do so. Decreasing the prop pitch will help compensate for a lack of horsepower and will provide more torque (a faster hole shot).
Timing varies every year due to changing weather conditions. Customers typically begin to summerize in mid-May or once spring frost ends the middle of June.
Weather conditions vary every year. Most customers typically winterize as soon as they are done with their boating season in September and early October.
It's always wise to winterize regardless of where you store your boat. If your garage or shop is fully insulated and/or heated and the temperature inside does not drop below 32°, you are likely safe. However, the majority of frozen engine blocks we see come from those who store their boats in a garage or shop without winterizing. If there is a power outage or a shop door is left open too long, the temperature could drop enough to incur freeze damage. Preventative maintenance is less costly than repairs!
